Mia Kivinen
Curator and educator
Mia Kivinen is a Helsinki-based lighting designer and curator specializing in light art. She holds a master’s degree from both the Theatre Academy and the Academy of Fine Arts of Finland. In her master's thesis for the latter, she addressed the question of what light art is, a question that defines her research still. Some of her other interests are site specific and / or minimalistic light art, as well as history of light art. She also travels quite extensively touring light art events.
Kivinen is a consulting curator for Finland’s biggest light art festival Lux Helsinki, and a curator of the smallest light art festival (probably) anywhere, Thesmallest. Kivinen is a founding member of the Finnish light art society FLASH and played a key role in the first two FLASH Biennales. She has curated light art for public spaces and museums, and worked for festivals and organisations in various roles.
Kivinen teaches lighting design and light art, mainly at the University of the Arts Finland, and lectures about it anywhere. She’s an avid writer or all things light art, and talks about it, constantly. Kivinen has extensive experience in organizations and networks of light and media arts, and building community has become an integral part of her work.
