Terike Haapoja: Night Sky

A commissioned work for Myllypuro Hospital.

Northern lights are the tourist attraction of Finnish Lapland. Myllypuro is one of the uninviting 60’s suburbs of Helsinki. Night Sky is a permanent installation that brings the northern lights in real time to Myllypuro. The work consists of a matrix of 1000 LED lights, installed to the facade of the building. The 40m x 20 m matrix is invisible during daytime, but during dark hours it displays a visualization of aurora borealis in Lapland in real-time. Real-time research data from Finnish Institute for Meteorology is de-coded into a colourful display that enables the local people to witness the cycles and intensity of sun storms, usually only visible in the north.
