WhiteNight: Pimennys - Eclipse
Light sculpture, situated in the courtyards of buildings.
At the heart of the work "Pimennys" (Eclipse) is the idea of contrasts, particularly the opposing natures of the sun and the moon. These two celestial bodies symbolize many contrasting elements: cold and warm, night and day, as well as light and shadow. Their coexistence creates a continuous tension between these phenomena. The eclipse represents the moment when the sun, moon, and earth are aligned, creating a perfect contrast that can obscure an entire celestial body from view. The artwork depicts the situation just after a perfect eclipse – a moment when light begins to push shadows aside and night turns into day. As the viewing angle changes, the amount of illuminated surface varies, reflecting the different phases of the eclipse. The piece consists of two sculptures, one representing the sun with warm tones and the other the moon with cool tones. The lighting on the back of the sculptures provides a surface for children's shadow play, which is produced by the low-angle light.
