Saana Volanen: Ohimennen / Passing by
A cycle of a light emerging, moving and vanishing.
A slowly rotating sphere is hanging in the air. A lightbeam is focused to the sphere, drawing a shadow on a wall, reminding a halo. As the sphere turns, the light’s reflection sweeps across the space. The light goes through an endless cycle of emergence, movement and vanishment. The spectator can move in the space, taking relations to the sphere, light and shadow.
One summer morning I woke up as Sun's first rays pierced my window. It was the first time when I saw Sun shining straight to my home. All other times of the day and the year the relation of Earth and Sun had been in such angles where only indirect light would shine into my home. For me that moment was a new incarnation of the celestial movements, those cosmic choreographies.
Passing by is inspired by everyday moments when a light from afar finds its way to a human's habitat and scale. The piece’s aim is not scientific demonstration but to transfer a tiny bit of that existential wonder to a spatial expirience.

The artwork consists of a sphere, a motor and a halogen profile spotlight. The sphere is made from acryl and has two sides: one covered with a mirroring film and the other one painted black with a grainy texture. The sphere is hanging from the motor, turning slowly around. The profile light is on a stand focused to the sphere.
