Ilkka Paloniemi: Grey Noise (Harmaa kohina)

Grey Noise is a laser-sound-haze installation

Grey Noise originates from an interest in air and its movement. Air is breathed.

Breathing is a periodic exchange of gases: oxygen-rich air is inhaled, and carbon dioxide-saturated gas is exhaled. Half of the Earth's oxygen is produced by forests and the other half by marine algae.

Noise is an immaterial manifestation of light and sound. It refers to radiation that can be heard and seen across all frequencies. It travels through air as the vibration of sound and scattering of light. Grey Noise is each individual's personal perception of this phenomenon. The light reveals the sheer nature of air. The sound is a collage of composed material and recordings of shortwave radio frequencies heard around the world.

Grey Noise is part of Ilkka Paloniemi's ongoing series of works that explore and reveal the phenomena of the Earth and their meanings.
