Anni Arffman: Grandmothers

Installation in a Greenhouse

Grannies may not be the trendiest of subjects, but to me, they have always been dear. In my childhood, grannies were old and wrinkled—wonderful, in other words. I’ve sculpted grannies by crumpling wet tissue paper, and their faces emerge when backlit. For Mulf, a multidisciplinary festival arranged in and around a private home, I was invited to create a piece for a greenhouse. In addition to the paper grannies, I used botanical waste from a botanical garden—large leaves and other plant material. The grannies were assembled onto the greenhouse wall and lit from within. As evening fell, the atmosphere became more dramatic.

Anni Arffman works across a wide range of disciplines, including painting, site-specific art, and public art. She has also led several community-based art projects and exhibitions.
