Jussi Kamunen: Axis Mundi
Axis mundi stands as a world axis connecting earth and sky.
The pillar of the artwork stands as a world axis – an axis mundi – connecting earth and sky, the visible and the invisible. At the ground surface, glowing lines of light pulse like veins. This pulse reflects the living layer of soil that sustains all growth and movement. Together, they make visible something often overlooked: the connection that runs downward into the earth and upward into the infinite. The concept of axis mundi explores this “world axis” – the connection between earth and sky – and in this work, the pillar functions as such an axis, linking the earthly and the cosmic, the seen and the unseen. It is a religious, mythological, and cultural idea describing a place or structure that unites heaven and earth, found in various forms across all religions and cultures around the world.
