Jussi Kamunen: Avaruusboltsit - Spaceballs

A playful reflection on Finland’s space dreams

Avaruusboltsit is a light art installation inspired by a Moon village once proposed for Finland. The work playfully reflects humanity’s desire to reach toward space and refers to Finland’s ambition to take part in the international space race – the idea of a small nation contributing to large cosmic endeavors. The installation is built from movement, reflection and play with light. Mirror balls scatter light into the surroundings, creating a small, fragmented cosmos within the urban space. The color palette draws inspiration from the history of space exploration: the optimism of the Apollo era, the ideological power of the Soviet program, the scientific restraint of European space cooperation, and the futuristic aesthetics of the new space age.
