Alexander Salvesen: Une forêt inestimable

Neon- and argontube, acrylic and charcoal on wood, 2021

The idea of the artwork is the forest, in this case "the priceless forest". It's a forest that is too valuable to be priced, too rich in hues to be cut down. The artwork is based around a barcode of straight lines of a 3-dimensional wooden surface and the straight neonlights that create a variety of shadows on the work. The colours of neon are restricted and do not always come in the diversity that I as an artist wish to use, but that's part of the game - like here the forest includes species and biodiversity that is not up to our liking, but it is there and it's valuable for what it is. The violent straightness of the work is connected to barcodes, and the market capitalist system that it serves.
